Current State of Broadcasting Aimed at the Visually and Hearing Impaired




The Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications, with the aim of encouraging the spread of broadcasting aimed at the visually and hearing impaired, revised broadcasting laws in 1997 and additionally established a duty to endeavor to broadcast as many programs as possible with subtitles, etc. In November of the same year, the objectives for spreading subtitled broadcasting were established and announced.
At this time, a survey aimed at general television broadcasting bodies was made into subtitled broadcasting, broadcasting with commentary, and sign language programs; and achievements in regard to broadcasting aimed at the visually and hearing impaired were gathered and a summary was announced.
