The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) compiled the number of subscribers for broadband services and their share reported by telecommunications carriers as of the end of September 2009, as mandated by the Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business (Ministerial Ordinance of MPT No. 46 of 1988).
Main Points
Fixed communications
With respect to the number of telephones subscribers, NTT East and West occupied 83.7% or a drop of 0.5 points in the total number of subscriptions to 39.77 million and dropped below 40 million for the first time.
The number of OABJ-IP phone numbers in use by NTT East and West was 69.6% which dropped slightly by 0.5 points while KDDI’s share increased to 13.9%. The share of 050-IP phone number users was 44.0% for SoftBank BB which dropped slightly, while NTT Communications share increased to 34.3%.
Mobile Communications
Subscribers in the cellular phone and PHS market amounted to 48.4% of total subscribers for NTT Docomo, 27.4% for KDDI and 18.7% for SoftBank Mobile, maintaining the current trends.
Internet Providers
Broadband service contracts amounted to 31.32 million or a 1.3% increase over the previous quarter.
The DSL share largely stayed the same with SoftBank BB at 38.5%, NTT East and West at 35.2% and E-Access at 23.3%.
FTTH shares were largely the same at 74.3% for NTT East and West and 9.4% for other power suppliers, while KDDI’s share increased to 7.6%.
