Duties to be Fulfilled by Administration for Diffusion and Beneficial Use of Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting

-Seventh interim report from Information and Communications Council-

On July 5, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received from the Information and Communications Council (Chairman: Takuma Otoshi, Chairman of IBM Japan) a seventh interim report concerning Inquiry No. 8, "Duties to be Fulfilled by Administration for Diffusion and Beneficial Use of Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting." An outline of the interim report is provided below.


1. Background of deliberation

Terrestrial digital broadcasting commenced in Japan's three largest metropolitan areas in December 2003, and was subsequently initiated across all prefectural capitals in December 2006. Terrestrial analog broadcasting will be terminated on July 24, 2011, by which point the migration to terrestrial digital broadcasting is scheduled to have been completed. The Information and Communications Council had previously compiled six interim reports on increased public awareness, receiver countermeasures, transmitter countermeasures, etc., aimed at ensuring the complete migration to terrestrial digital broadcasting by July 2011. The Council's seventh interim report was compiled on July 5 and focuses on proposals for dealing with challenges in the final year before the termination of analog broadcasting.

An outline and the body of the "Seventh Interim Report on Duties to be Fulfilled by Administration for Diffusion and Beneficial Use of Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting (Information and Communications Council 2004 Inquiry No. 8)" can be found in the enclosed documents.

3. Future schedule

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will continue to promote the diffusion of terrestrial digital broadcasting based on this interim report.
