On July 5 at 10:00 local time (Japanese time: 23:00 on July 5), the Plurinational State of Bolivia finalized and announced its decision to adopt the Japanese terrestrial digital television broadcasting system (ISDB-T) as its standard.
Bolivia will become the tenth foreign nation to adopt the Japanese system, which continues to be used in Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Paraguay and Philippines.
As a result of this, all South American countries (except for Guyana and Suriname) have now decided to use the Japanese terrestrial digital broadcasting system.
1. Adoption of Japanese system by government of Bolivia
(1) In order to encourage Bolivian government officials to adopt the Japanese system, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) invited persons in charge of studying the system to be trained in Japan and has dispatched specialists to seminars and delivered transmitters for use in broadcasting trials, while also cooperating with the relevant government agencies, broadcasting organizations, manufacturers and research institutions.
(2) As a result of this, on July 5, Bolivia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, David Choquhuanca, announced that Bolivia had decided to adopt the Japanese system as its terrestrial digital television broadcasting system, having valued the fact that high-definition television broadcasting can be offered simultaneously with mobile broadcasting services such as One Seg, and that reception is resilient against interference in mountainous regions and even inside moving vehicles.
2. Future initiatives by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC)
(1) The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) is in discussions regarding protocol for details of planned cooperation with the relevant government agencies, organizations and bodies to ensure the smooth introduction of the Japanese system in Bolivia, providing support through technical cooperation, training of specialists, etc.
(2) While cooperating with countries that have already adopted the Japanese system, the MIC will continue working to disseminate the Japanese system to other countries.
