The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has published “Comprehensive Countermeasures for the Final Year Before Migration to Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting,” in which policies to be implemented prior to the July 24, 2011 deadline for complete migration to terrestrial digital broadcasting are compiled, and systems required during this final pre-migration year are examined.
1. Background
Terrestrial analog television broadcasting will be terminated on July 24, 2011, with migration to terrestrial digital broadcasting scheduled to have been completed by that date.
Now, in addition to previous and existing initiatives, final systems required for welcoming in the FY 2011 termination of terrestrial analog broadcasting have been examined, and policies and initiatives of particular importance in FY 2010 have been compiled in “Comprehensive Countermeasures for the Final Year Before Migration to Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting.”
Support for all citizens in the migration to digital broadcasting will cease in July 2011, so the MIC will this year put its full power into enforcing comprehensive countermeasures in cooperation with many related parties, in order for people to be able to continue viewing television.
2. Main items
・Final checks of households that have been left behind
・Establishment of terrestrial digital broadcasting call center staffed by 1,000 operators
・Establishment of temporary local consultation stalls in approximately 1,000 locations nation-wide
・Final checks of senior citizens, etc., by volunteers
・One millions senior citizens, etc., to be encouraged in cooperation with Japan Post Service Co., Ltd.
・Accelerated support for digitization of shared facilities as countermeasures againts obstacles to reception (particularly in areas affected by shadows of tall buildings)
・Accleration of new countermeasures against poor reception
・Digitization of public facilities
