Results from Meeting of Japan and ASEAN Information and Communications Cabinet Ministers

 

 On January 13, 2011, a Meeting of Information and Communications Cabinet Ministers from Japan and the 10 ASEAN* countries was held in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). The meeting was attended by Japan's Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Yoshihiro Katayama, and as well as facilitating an exchange of ideas regarding matters such as cooperation between Japan and the ASEAN countries in the field of information and communications, there was also compiled an Operational Plan for the next year.


1. Outline of Meeting of Japan and ASEAN Information and Communications Cabinet Ministers

(1) Date and time: January 13, 2011, commencing at 16:15 (Japan time: 17:15)

(3) Main persons attending: as per enclosed document

2. Outline of results from Meeting of Cabinet Ministers

(1) Acting as joint chairmen were Japan's Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Yoshihiro Katayama and Malaysia's (sponsoring nation) Information, Communications and Culture Minister Rais Yatim, and an exchange of ideas was conducted regarding initiatives in the field of information and communications.

(2) In addition, there was compiled a document entitled “2011 Operational Plan for Japan and ASEAN Countries in Information and Communications Field,” containing cooperative policy between Japan and the ASEAN countries in the field of information and communications over the next year. Cooperation with each ASEAN country will now be promoted in accordance with this Operational Plan.

(3) Outline of Operational Plan
 ・ Infrastructure improvements in ASEAN region
 ・ Proposals regarding ways of making beneficial use of advanced ICT
 ・ Proposals regarding organizational aspects
 ・ Promotion of international cooperation concerning information security
 ・ Training of capable personnel

*ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations)
A regional cooperative organization consisting of 10 countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. ASEAN aims to promote economic and sociocultural growth in the region, as well as maintaining political and economical stability throughout the region.
