Announcement of Roadmap for Shared Digital Facilities in Remote Places (Sixth Edition)

In light of the schedule for complete migration to terrestrial digital broadcasting by July 24, 2011, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled a "Roadmap for Shared Digital Facilities in Remote Places" (see enclosure) in order to complete the establishment of shared digital facilities in all remote places by remodeling independent shared facilities (shared facilities maintained by local viewers) that are current as of the end of December 2010.
The first edition of this roadmap was based on the state of affairs at the end of September 2008, and it has been updated twice a year since.
Please note that in cases where improvement of independent shared facilities would bring an excessive burden on local viewers, state aid systems are being established (see reference data).

Outline of Roadmap for Shared Digital Facilities in Remote Places

As of the end of December 2010, digitalization was complete at 83.0% (household base 85.1%) of the 12,364 facilities (utilized by approximately 810,000 households).

The aim of implementing digitalization support in all facilities prior to the termination of analog broadcasting in July 2011 is within reach (this includes tentative countermeasures using satellites).

Breakdown of digitalization support rate (83.0% (10,268 facilities, approximately 690,000 households)):

  1. Facilities where repairs have been made and migration has been completed through incorporation of cable television: 70.3% (8,698 facilities)
  2. Facilities where there are plans to migrate to direct reception: 5.0% (618 facilities)
  3. Facilities where subsidiary aid from the Japanese government is being issued by commissioned businesses: 7.7% (952 facilities)

Reference: State of shared NHK facilities
As of the end of December 2010, 91% of the shared NHK facilities installed and operated by NHK and local television audiences supported digitalization (total number of shared facilities: approximately 7,800).
