Deliberation Commences on “Technical Requirements for 920MHz Band Electronic Tag Systems, etc.”

Information and Communications Council deliberation commences

On February 15, 2011, the Information and Communications Council Technology Subcommittee (Head of Subcommittee: Masao Sakauchi, Head of the National Institute of Informatics) commenced deliberation on “Technical Requirements for 920MHz-Band Electronic Tag Systems, etc.”

1. Background to commencement of deliberation

950MHz-band electronic tag systems, etc. (passive tag systems and active low-power radio systems) using frequencies between 950 and 958MHz are utilized in commodities administration, etc. in the field of production and distribution, and it is anticipated that in future the utilization of these systems will expand greatly in smart meters for the electric power and gas fields.
On the other hand, a report (dated November 30, 2010) published by the “Working Group for Study of Frequencies for Implementation of Wireless Broadband” proposed a basic policy for the reorganization of frequencies in the 900MHz band through a transition to 915-928MHz (hereinafter, “920MHz band”) along with a 5MHz bandwidth expansion aimed at catering for the introduction of smart meters, etc., in order to strengthen international competitiveness based on frequency assignment statuses in the West.
In view of this, deliberation has commenced on technical requirements for 920MHz band electronic tag systems, etc.

2. Content for deliberation

Deliberation will be conducted with regard to “Technical Requirements for 920MHz-Band Electronic Tag Systems, etc.” in “Necessary Technical Requirements for Upgrade of Low-Power Radio Systems” (Information and Communications Council Inquiry No. 2009 – September 30, 2002).

3. Schedule

A partial report will be received in June 2011, and the related regulations will subsequently be serviced.
