State of Numbers of Contracted Telecommunications Service Subscribers, etc. (as of End of December 2010)

  In accord with Telecommunications Business Reporting Regulations (1988 Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Ordinance No. 46), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has received and compiled reports from telecommunications carriers stating the numbers of contracted telecommunications service subscribers, etc., as of the end of December 2010.


An outline is given below. (For further details, please refer to the enclosed document.)


1. Subscription phones and ISDN

  As of the end of December 2010, the total number of subscription phone and ISDN contracts stands at 40,419,000, showing an 8.9% decrease over the preceding 12-month period and indicating an ongoing trend for decline. The total number of ISDN contracts held by NTT East and West stands at 35,348,000, also indicating an ongoing trend for decline.


2. Number of IP phones in use

  As of the end of December 2010, the total number of IP phones in use stands at 24,963,000, showing an 11.9% increase over the preceding 12-month period and indicating an ongoing trend for increase. Particularly remarkable is the expansion of the number of 0AB~J-IP phones in use, which shows an increase of 24.7% over the preceding 12-month period.


3. Mobile phones and PHS

  As of the end of December 2010, the total number of mobile phone and PHS subscribers stands at 120,709,000, showing a 5.0% increase over the preceding 12-month period and indicating an ongoing trend for increase.
