On March 16, 2011, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) approved a request from Japan Broadcasting Corporation President Masayuki Matsumoto dated March 16, 2011, for license fee exemptions as measures to be taken in response to the "Tohoku district -off the Pacific Ocean earthquake" and "Northern Nagano earthquake."
An outline of this matter is as follows.
1. Scope of broadcast reception contracts subject to exemption
In the boundaries applied by The Disaster Relief Act (1947 Law, Act No. 118), the following will be covered:
(1) Broadcast reception contracts executed with the installation of receivers in buildings that have been damaged to the extent of suffering partial destruction, being half-burnt, or being inundated above floor level;
(2) Broadcast reception contracts of those who receive refuge advice, instructions or evacuation orders in place based on the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act (1961 Law, Act No. 223) for a period of at least one month.
*When both (1) and (2) apply, this shall be treated as per (2).
2. Exemption period
(1) March 2011 to August 2011
(2) March 2011 to August 2011
However, if, as of September 1, 2011, there remain refuge advice, instructions or evacuation orders in place based on the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act, the exemption period will instead end in the month following the month during which these are cancelled.
3. Anticipated number of license fee exemptions
Approximately 560,000
4. Anticipated sum of license fee exemptions
Approximately 5.9 billion yen
