Aggregation and Preliminary Calculation of Internet Traffic in Japan

Publication of aggregate results as of November 2010

In order to ascertain the true state of Internet traffic in Japan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has aggregated traffic and made preliminary calculations as of November 2010, with the cooperation of six Internet Service Providers (see note 1) and researchers (see note 2), and has compiled these results in the enclosed document.

Main points

  • As of November 2010, overall download traffic from broadband service subscribers in Japan was estimated to be approximately 1.71Tbps (terabits per second) (see note 3), representing an increase by a factor of 1.3 (25.4%) over the past year.
  • On the other hand, overall upload traffic from broadband service subscribers was estimated to be approximately 896.5Gbps, which representing a 2.8% increase over the past six months and marking a turnaround from the previous six-month period, in which there was recorded the first decrease since the beginning of aggregation. However, in comparison with the level recorded one year ago, there remains a 5.0% increase overall.
  • Since May 2009, overall traffic has exceeded the growth of traffic at the six cooperating ISPs. This is due to a trend for decrease in the market share of these six ISPs (which are used to estimate overall traffic) within the Big IX, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) is also moving ahead with analysis of the main causes.

Note 1: Aggregation covered six networks from six ISPs: Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ), NTT Communications, K-opticom, KDDI, Softbank BB, Softbank Telecom
Note 2: Hiroshi Ezaki (professor at The University of Tokyo), Akira Kato (professor at Keio University), Jiro Nagayoshi (IIJ researcher), Kensuke Fukuda (associate professor at the National Institute of Informatics), and Yuji Sekiya (lecturer at The University of Tokyo)
Note 3: 1T (tera) (10 to the power of 12) = 1000G (giga)
