Support for Migration to Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting in Relation to Facilities/Equipment Affected by Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has settled on additional support for facilities/equipment that have been affected by the Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster, in the form of the expansion of terrestrial digital broadcasting tuner support projects and support for the restoration of shared reception facilities.
In order to smoothly implement migration to terrestrial digital broadcasting in disaster-affected areas, the MIC will push important countermeasures while applying this additional support.

1. Expansion of terrestrial digital broadcasting tuner support projects

Currently, a support project is being carried out to give free delivery of simple tuners, etc. to households that are fully exempt from paying NHK broadcast license fees and which do not have support for terrestrial digital broadcasting. This project will now be expanded to provide additional new cover for disaster-affected households that do not have support for terrestrial digital broadcasting.
Disaster-affected households covered by this new support in regions where the Disaster Relief Act (Act No. 118 of 1947 Law) has been applied since March 11, 2011 (excluding Tokyo) will comprise:

1) Households that are/were resident in buildings that have sustained damaged to the extent of being half-destroyed, half-burnt or inundated above floor level
2) Households that have been advised/instructed to take refuge or ordered to evacuate based on the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act (Act No. 223 of 1961 Law) for at least one month

Applications for support will be accepted from May 13 (Fri), 2011, and will end on July 24 (Sun), 2011 (applications postmarked July 24 will be accepted). (However, in the meantime the application period will be extended for Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.)

In addition, as of May 10, 2011, the following support will be provided for facilities affected by the recent earthquake disaster.

  • In regions where the Disaster Relief Act (Act No. 118 of 1947 Law) has been applied since March 11, 2011 (excluding Tokyo), subsidies will be issued as follows to cover expenses required for the maintenance of disaster-affected shared reception facilities.

    1) Assistance covering two-thirds of repair costs, etc. for shared facilities as countermeasures against obstacles to reception
    2) Assistance covering half of repair costs, etc. for shared facilities at apartment buildings (“limited to cases where cost per household exceeds 35,000 yen” does not apply)
