On May 17, 2011, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial reply from the Information and Communications Council (Chairman: Takuma Ootoshi, Chairman of IBM Japan) concerning “technical requirements for an 80GHz-band high speed wireless communication system” in Information and Communications Council Inquiry No. 2009 (dated September 30, 2002), entitled “Technical Requirements Necessary for Better Performance of Low Power Radio Systems.”
1. Background
At present, wireless communication systems using microwaves/milli-waves are implementing and applying transmission speeds of roughly 100Mbps.
In contrast, optical cables utilize from several-hundred Mbps to 10Gbps, and as well as hopes for the implementation of a system that will enable line construction with relative flexibility and ease in areas where it is difficult to lay such optical cables, etc. there are also requests for the implementation of a wireless communication system for the transmission of high-definition images at speeds of 1Gbps or faster in non-compressed formats and with minimum latency.
In view of these circumstances, the Mobile Communications System Committee, Information and Communications Council Technology Subcommittee (Chief Examiner: Makoto Ando, Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School of Engineering) has progressed with deliberation over technical requirements for an 80GHz-band high speed wireless communication system, and on May 17, 2011 the results of its deliberation were received in the form of a reply.

Based on this partial reply, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will service regulations relating to an 80GHz-band high speed wireless communication system.
