Results from 2010 “Survey of Communication Utilization Trends”

 

  The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled results from a “Survey of Communication Utilization Trends” that investigated the status of telecommunications services used in homes and businesses, etc. at the end of 2010.
  Highlights of the survey results can be found below, and a summary of the results is provided in the attachment.

Highlights of survey results

Results relating to individuals:

  • There are 94.62 million Internet users in Japan, representing a population diffusion rate of 78.2%.
    The number of Internet users increased by 540,000 over the previous year to 94.62 million, and in the same period the population diffusion rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 78.2%. [See p1.]
  • The Internet utilization rate by persons aged 70 or above is increasing.
    Internet utilization rates classified by age brackets show an increase in the number of users aged 70 or above. [See p2.]

Results relating to households:

  • 77.9% of households use broadband lines, while 52.2% of these households use optical lines.
    7.9% of households access the Internet using broadband connections (1.1 points higher than the previous year). Also, 52.2% of these households access the Internet using optical lines (11.1 points higher than the previous year). [See p5.]

Results classified by prefecture

  • Results show that personal Internet utilization rates are highest in prefectures that have large cities.
    Personal Internet utilization rates are 80% or higher in Kanagawa, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Aichi and other prefectures. [See p2 and p3.]

Summary of survey

  The Survey of Communication Utilization Trends targets households (whole households and their individual members) and businesses, and has been carried out every year since 1990 (the business survey was added in 1993 and has been carried out every year since 1994, and surveys of household members have been implemented since 2001) as a general statistical survey based on the Statistics Act (Act No. 53 of 2007 Law), and beginning in 2010 surveys have also been implemented with classifications according to prefecture.
