Publication of Final Report from Panel Discussion concerning the Brain and ICT

 

  Through the “Panel Discussion concerning the Brain and ICT,” the aim of which has been to carry out studies regarding tasks to be given attention in the crossover field of brain research and ICT, as well as systems for the promotion of these tasks, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled and is now publishing research and development items relating to ICT that uses neuroscience, research and development promotion methods, and notes concerning ethics and safety, etc.


1. Background

  On April 30, 2010, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) initiated the “Panel Discussion concerning the Brain and ICT” (Chief Investigator: Toshio Yanagida, Special Professor at Osaka University Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences) to carry out studies regarding tasks to be given attention in the crossover field of brain research and ICT, as well as systems for the promotion of these tasks, as this field is expected to provide assistance for disabled and aged persons as well as implementing information and communication networks that can provide flexible support for ultra-low energy consumption and unexpected situations. The Panel Discussion made progress with its studies, and in August 2010 an appeal was held for opinions on its published interim report.
  Thereafter, studies were conducted on research and development promotion systems, points to remember, and items to be given due consideration in relation to tasks concerning ethics and safety for data privacy and systems, and results of these studies have now been compiled.
