Publication of Report on Results from Electronic Publishing Environment Maintenance Project

 

 In view of Japan's rapidly progressing electronic publishing market, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has worked on projects designed to establish a technological foundation for the electronic publishing market, in order to maintain an environment (open electronic publishing environment) in which various players including small to medium publishers can enter the electronic publishing market and end-users can easily and freely access a wealth of content.
 Project results have now been compiled and are published herein.


1. Outline

 In view of Japan's rapidly progressing electronic publishing market, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has worked on projects (the FY 2010 “Project Supporting Creation of New Beneficial ICT Services”) designed to establish a technological foundation for the electronic publishing market, in order to maintain an environment (open electronic publishing environment) in which various players including small to medium publishers can enter the electronic publishing market and end-users can easily and freely access a wealth of content.
 Ten project results have now been compiled and are published herein, including environmental maintenance for the Electronic Book Exchange Format Standardization Project, the EPUB decision on Japanese extension methods, and collaboration of next-generation bibliographical information.


2. Project results

(Main results)

  • Establishment of electronic book exchange format
  • Adoption of EPUB decision on Japanese extension methods and the EPUB3.0 draft from the “IDPF (International Digital Publishing Forum)”
  • Decision on guidelines for collaboration of next-generation bibliographical information, and establishment of recent publication information center
  • Decision on guidelines for metadata information sharing, and construction of metadata information base
  • Decision on electronic publishing content distribution control codes that can support articles and tables of contents, and guidelines for application
  • Guidelines for electronic publishing works supporting audible reading, and guidelines text extraction from image data
  • Decision on draft electronic book storage standards for SD cards, and application of standards body SD Association's “SD-SD eBook” standard
  • Construction of information sharing cloud for promotion of electronic publication distribution, and decision on shared usage guidelines for publication-related information
  • Establishment of basic system for implementation of flexible verifications complying with research and education facilities' attachment levels
  • Decision on guidelines for beneficial use of electronic publishing in libraries
