Report on Current State of Cable Television

 

This is to announce that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled a report on the state of the diffusion of cable television as of the end of March, 2011.
 Approximately 26.02 million households subscribe to cable television from licensed facilities (terminal 501 and above) conducting independent broadcasting (an increase of approximately 5.3% from the end of the preceding fiscal year), marking a household diffusion rate of approximately 48.8% (an increase of approximately 2.1 percentage points from the end of the preceding fiscal year), which shows an ongoing trend for increase in the diffusion of such broadcasting.
 There are 665 licensed facilities conducting independent broadcasting (a decrease of approximately 2.5% from the end of the preceding fiscal year) and 521 licensed facility businesses conducting independent broadcasting (a decrease of approximately 2.6% from the end of the preceding fiscal year).
 Detailed figures regarding the numbers of households subscribing to cable television, facilities and businesses are as per the enclosed document.
 In addition, in terms of telecommunications service-utilizing broadcasting (cable service-utilizing broadcasting), approximately 900,000 households subscribe to IP multicast format broadcasting (an increase of approximately 29.4% from the end of the preceding fiscal year).
