In order to support “World IPv6 Day,” a global IPv6 experimental event held on June 8, 2011, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will register its website as an “IPv6 Enabled Website” at this event.
“World IPv6 Day” is a global experimental event where participants will simultaneously switch their own websites that are open the Internet to provide IPv6 (see Note 1) support, the purpose being to promote the smooth introduction of IPv6. Building on the IPv4 (see Note 2) address exhaustion, this event has been planned mainly by ISOC (see Note 3) with participants including major content providing businesses from countries all over the world. The event will be held for the 24 hours of June 8, 2011 (commencing 09:00 on June 8 (Wed), Japan time).
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) is currently working to promote the introduction of IPv6 in Japan, for example by initiating the “Research Society concerning Faster Internet Utilization through IPv6” to investigate IPv6 introduction policy that will place little burden on end-users, etc. This event is an initiative promoting the introduction of IPv6, which the MIC hereby endorses and declares its support for.
In addition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will register its website ( http://www.soumu.go.jp), which completed IPv6 support in March 2009, as an “IPv6 Enabled Website” (see Note 4) at this event.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will continue to actively work for the smooth introduction of IPv6, including through this initiative.
(Background)
As a result of APNIC (see Note 5) and JPNIC (see Note 6) announcing the close of normal distribution of IPv4 addresses on April 15, 2011, it became more important than ever before for Japanese telecommunications carriers, etc. to quickly introduce IPv6, the successor to the IPv4 standard.
Telecommunications carriers' IPv6 support for major ISPs, etc. is already under way, and since April 2011 the provision of IPv6 Internet connection services has gained momentum. It is therefore that progress continues to be made with IPv6 support in websites and Internet services such as content provision, etc., which are covered by this event.
Note 1: IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6): The successor to the IPv4 standard, with a practically infinite number of IP addresses (3.4 x 10 to the power of 38). Compared with IPv4 its features include enhanced security, simplification of all options, and so on.
Note 2: IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4): This communication system is utilized as the main basic technology behind the Internet. Approximately 43 hundred million IP addresses can be allocated using IPv4.
Note 3: ISOC (Internet Society): An organization established in 1992 with the purpose of carrying out problem-solving and discussions regarding Internet-related standardization, education and policies.
Note 4: Website first providing IPv6 support in this event will be registered as “Participating Websites.”
Note 5: Asia Pacific Network Information Centre: This organization controls and distributed Internet resources such as IP addresses, etc. in the Asia-Pacific region.
Note 6: Japan Network Information Center: This organization controls Internet resources such as IP addresses, etc. in Japan. (http://www.nic.ad.jp/)
