Radio Wave Safety Seminar to be held

Focusing on carcinogenic radio wave evaluations from the International Agency for Research on Cancer

 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), with cooperation from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, will hold a “Radio Wave Safety Seminar” at KFC Hall (Ryogoku, Tokyo) from 13:00 on August 1 (Mon), 2011, as outlined below.


 On May 31, 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a special organization under the World Health Organization (WHO), announced as its assessment on the carcinogenicity of radio waves used in mobile telephones, etc. that these waves “may have some carcinogenic effects on humans.”
 In order for people to acquire correct knowledge of this matter, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold a “Radio Wave Safety Seminar” targeting ordinary people. This Seminar will feature easy-to-understand explanations of the health effects of radio waves from mobile telephones, etc. and domestic and overseas cancer outbreak trends, etc. from specialists with experience of engaging in health risk evaluations for WHO and IARC. The following information is provided as a guide as we would like many people to participate in this Seminar.

                  Chiyoji Okubo – Head of Electromagnetic Field Information Center, Japan Electrical Safety & Environment Technology Laboratories
                  (Engaged in research concerning health risks from electromagnetic waves, holding successive jobs as WHO Radio and Environmental Hygiene Unit Scientist, etc.; associate professor at Meiji Pharmaceutical University)
