State of Numbers of Contracted Telecommunications Service Subscribers, etc. (as of End of March 2011)

In accordance with Telecommunications Business Reporting Regulations (1988 Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Ordinance No. 46), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has received and compiled reports from telecommunications carriers stating the numbers of contracted telecommunications service subscribers, etc., as of the end of March 2011.


 Note: Concerning the handling of contract numbers, etc.

 Since at present it is difficult to gain an accurate understanding of the true state of contract numbers, etc. in regions affected by the Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster, for the time being we will make a provisional announcement of the contract numbers, etc. as understood by all carriers. In future, when more accurate contract numbers, etc. have been received from all carriers, we will retroactively correct the contract numbers, etc. and make another official announcement.

An outline is given below. (For further details, please refer to the enclosed document.)


1. Subscription phones and ISDN

 As of the end of March 2011, the total number of subscription phone and ISDN contracts stands at 39,568,000, showing an 8.7% decrease over the same period last year and indicating an ongoing trend for decline. The total number of ISDN contracts held by NTT East and West stands at 34,524,000, also indicating an ongoing trend for decline.


2. Number of IP phones in use

 As of the end of March 2011, the total number of IP phones in use stands at 25,664,000, showing an 10.9% increase over the same period last year and indicating an ongoing trend for increase. Particularly remarkable is the expansion of the number of  0AB~J-IP phones in use, which shows an increase of 23.2% over the same period last year.


3. Mobile phones and PHS

 As of the end of March 2011, the total number of mobile phone and PHS subscribers stands at 123,287,000, showing a 6.0% increase over the same period last year and indicating an ongoing trend for increase.
