State of Numbers of Contracted Telecommunications Service Subscribers, etc. (as of End of June 2011)

  In accordance with Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business (1988 Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Ordinance No. 46), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has received and compiled reports from telecommunications carriers stating the numbers of contracted telecommunications service subscribers, etc., as of the end of June 2011.


1. Subscription phones and ISDN

As of the end of June 2011, the total number of subscription phone and ISDN contracts stands at 38,549,000, showing a 9% decrease over the same period last year and indicating an ongoing trend for decline. The total number of ISDN contracts held by NTT East and West stands at 33,651,000, also indicating an ongoing trend for decline.


2. Number of IP phones in use

  As of the end of June 2011, the total number of IP phones in use stands at 26,418,000, showing an 11.2% increase over the same period last year and indicating an ongoing trend for increase. Particularly remarkable is the expansion of the number of 0AB~J-IP phones in use, which shows an increase of 21.2% over the same period last year.


3. Mobile phones and PHS

  As of the end of June 2011, the total number of mobile phone and PHS subscribers stands at 125,240,000, showing a 6.5% increase over the same period last year and indicating an ongoing trend for increase.
