Approval of Broadcasting Reception License Fee Exemptions in Response to The Great East Japan Earthquake

Exemption period extended

  On August 30, 2011, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) approved a request from Japan Broadcasting Corporation President Masayuki Matsumoto dated August 11, 2011, for broadcasting receiver`s fee exemptions as measures to be taken in response to the “Great East Japan Earthquake.”
  An outline of this matter is as follows.


1. Scope of broadcast reception contracts subject to exemption

In the boundaries applied by The Disaster Relief Act (1947 Law, Act No. 118), the following will be covered:

(1) Broadcast reception contracts executed with the installation of receivers in buildings that have been damaged to the extent of suffering partial destruction, being half-burnt, or being inundated above floor level;
(2) Broadcast reception contracts of those who receive refuge advice, instructions or evacuation orders in place based on the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act (1961 Law, Act No. 223) for a period of at least one month;
(3) Broadcast reception contracts where the establishment of “danger zones,” “systematic evacuation zones,” “emergency evacuation preparation zones” or “special evacuation encouragement zones” continues for at least one month, based on designations by the Head Office for Nuclear Emergency Preparedness in line with the Act on Special Measures Concerning Nuclear Emergency Preparedness (1999 Law, Act No. 156).
*This is the sames as the scope approved on March 16 and June 24, 2011.


2. Exemption period

  March 2011 to August 2011 (extended by two months until August 2011)
  However, in areas where the evacuation orders, etc. in part (2) of 1 and zones established in part (3) of 1 are continuing as of November 1, 2011, the exemption period will instead end in the month following the month during which these are cancelled.
  Additionally, in areas where the evacuation orders, etc. in part (2) of 1 and zones established in part (3) of 1 are newly established on or after November 1, 2011, the exemption period will instead end in the month following the month during which these are cancelled.


3. Anticipated number of receiver`s fee exemptions

Approximately 150,000


4. Anticipated sum ofreceiver`s fee exemptions

Approximately 500 million yen
