Aggregation and Preliminary Calculation of Internet Traffic in Japan

Publication of aggregate results as of May 2011

In order to ascertain the true state of Internet traffic in Japan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has aggregated traffic and made preliminary calculations as of May 2011, with the cooperation of six Internet Service Providers (see note 1), five Internet Exchanges (IX) (see note 2) and researchers (see note 3), and has compiled these results.

Main points

・As of May 2011, overall download traffic from broadband service (see note 4) subscribers in Japan was estimated to be approximately 1.51Tbps (terabits per second) (see note 5), representing an increase by a factor of 1.2 (22.6%) over the past year. Traffic continues to increase.

・On the other hand, overall upload traffic from broadband service subscribers was estimated to be approximately 692.2Gbps, which shows a trend for continued decline since aggregation in May 2010.

Note 1: Six ISPs – Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ), NTT Communications, K-opticom, KDDI, Softbank BB, and Softbank Telecom
Note 2: Five Internet Exchanges – Internet Multifeed, Equinix Japan, Japan Internet Exchange, BBIX and WIDE Project
Note 3: Hiroshi Ezaki (professor at The University of Tokyo), Akira Kato (professor at Keio University), Jiro Nagayoshi (IIJ researcher), Kensuke Fukuda (associate professor at the National Institute of Informatics), and Yuji Sekiya (lecturer at The University of Tokyo)
Note 4: FTTH, DSL, CATV and FWA
Note 5: 1T (tera) (10 to the power of 12) = 1000G (giga)
Note 6: The traffic share of the six ISPs cooperations with the main IX used for preliminary calculation of overall traffic (downloads and uploads) continues to decline, hence due to the likelihood that preliminary calculations diverge from the true state, from now on the share of contract numbers of the six cooperating ISPs will be used in the preliminary calculation of overall traffic. Furthermore, recalculations have been made retroactively (see attachment for details).
