February 17, 2012
On February 17, 2012, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial reply from the Information and Communications Council (Chairman: Takuma Ootoshi, Chairman of IBM Japan) concerning “technical requirements for solid state ship radar” within “Technical Requirements for Maritime Radio Communication Equipment” (Telecommunication Technology Commission Inquiry No. 50 – April 23, 1990).
Magnetron (vacuum tube amplifiers) have traditionally been used by ships for radar, but in recent years there has been progress in the development of solid state ship radar (solid state amplifiers), which in comparison with previous forms of radar benefit from longer service life, reduction of unnecessary emissions, stable frequencies, and so on.
On the other hand, since it is difficult to achieve large output with ship radar using solid state components, it is necessary to elongate the pulse width so as to increase the amount of energy transmitted in order to obtain functions equal to those of traditional ship radar (maximum detection distance, etc.). However, depending on the circumstances of use, elongation of pulse width can pose a risk of harmful interference affecting the radar of other ships.
In view of such circumstances, deliberation has advanced with regards to “technical requirements for solid state ship radar” towards the implementation of ship radar using solid state elements, and a partial reply was received from the Information and Communications Council on February 17, 2012.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will service the relevant regulations based on this partial reply.
