“Wireless LAN Business Research Society” to be Initiated

1. Background and purpose

　Mobile traffic is rapidly increasing against a backdrop of the spread of mobile terminals such as smart phones, etc. Wireless LAN is effective as an offload measure to circumvent this rapid increase, and it is expected that there will be further expansion of opportunities for utilization of wireless LAN as public wireless LAN is provided in various forms, etc.
　Therefore, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will initiate a “Wireless LAN Business Research Society” in order to put in order the current state of wireless LAN, extract and arrange challenges relating to safe and secure use and diffusion, and consider necessary policy.

2. Items for consideration

(1) Wireless LAN
・Current state of wireless LAN
・Public wireless LAN diffusion policy (offload, business activation, regional activation, disaster support, etc.)
・Security countermeasures and user education
・Dealing with challenges for other wireless LAN applications, etc.
(2) Other necessary items

3. Schedule

　The first meeting will be held on March 23 (Fri), 2012, and a report will be compiled in around July of this year.
