Quarterly Data on Telecommunications Service Contract Numbers and Market Share Published (FY 2011 Q3 (End of December 2011))
This is to announce that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled a report on telecommunications service contract numbers and market share in FY 2011 Q3 (end of December 2011) , based on reports from telecommunications carriers in accord with provisions in the Telecommunications Business Report Regulations (1988 Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Order No. 46) (*1).
Please note that in response to the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the following support has been implemented in compiling this data. Note: Concerning handling of contract numbers, etc.
With regards to contract numbers in regions affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, for some businesses we will make calculations using provisional numbers based on the contract numbers as understood by said businesses and officially announce these as the data for this quarter.
1. Fixed communications
(1) The number of subscription telephone contracts (NTT East and West subscription telephones, as well as special line, 0ABJ-IP and CATV telephones) decreased, now standing at 56.98 million (down 0.2% over the previous term).
The subscription telephone market share of NTT East and West also continues to decrease, now standing at 79.6% (down 0.4 points from the previous term).
(2) The number of IP telephone numbers continuesto increase, now standing at 27.77 million (up 2.7% over the previous term). Among these, the number of 0ABJ-IP telephone numbers continues to increase and now stands at 20.17 million (up 3.9% over the previous term). In terms of the share of the number of 0ABJ-IP telephone numbers, NTT East and West decreased to 65.8% (down 0.3 points from the previous term) while KDDI continues to increase by moving to 18.2% (up 0.8 points over the previous term).
Also, the number of 050-IP telephone numbers continues to decrease and now stands at 7.60 million (down 0.4% from the previous term). In terms of the share of the number of 050-IP telephone numbers, NTT Communications rose to 39.0% (up 0.1 points over the previous term) while Softbank BB fell to 40.0% (down 0.8 points from the previous term).
2. Mobile communications
The number of mobile communications contracts (including MVNO) continues to increase, now standing at 129.87 million (up 2.0% over the previous term). The number of mobile phone contracts continues to increase, rising to 125.56 million (up 2.0% over the previous term). Also, the number of PHS contracts continues to increase and has now reached 4.31 million (up 3.9% over the previous term).
There was little change in terms of the share of mobile phone and PHS contracts, with NTT DoCoMo having 45.9% (down 0.4 points from the previous term) and KDDI 26.4% (no change from the previous term), while Softbank Mobile increased to 21.4% (up 0.3 points over the previous term).
The number of subscribers to MVNO contracts is 4.44 million.
3. Internet connections
(1) The number of broadband service (*2) contracts continues to increase, now standing at 37.704 million (up 4.0% over the previous term).
(2) The number of 3.9G mobile telephone packet transfer communication service contracts is drastically increasing, having risen to 1.139 million (2.9 times more than in the previous term).
(3) The number of BWA contracts is drastically increasing, having risen to 1.697 million (up 36.4% over the previous term).
(4) The number of FTTH contracts continues to increase, now standing at 21.892 million (up 2.2% over the previous term). In FTTH market share, NTT East and West has 74.5% (no change), electrical power system businesses have 9.1% (up 0.1% over the previous term), and KDDI has 9.2% (up 0.2 points over the previous term).
(5) The number of DSL contracts continues to decrease, falling to 7.058 million (down 4.8% from the previous term). In terms of market share, leader Softbank BB stayed at 38.8% (no change) while second-place NTT East and West dropped to 34.7% (down 0.1 points from the previous term).
(6) The number of FTTH contracts across all prefectures is increasing, while in all prefectures the number of DSL contract is decreasing.
