Expansion of Social Knowledge Infrastructure through Digital Archive of Knowledge
Public announcement of proposal and guidelines
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) initiated the “Research Society concerning Digital Archive of Knowledge” (Chairman: Shigeo Sugimoto, Professor at Tsukuba University Graduate School) since February 2012, and the Society has studied trends of initiatives aimed at the promotion of digital archives.
This is to officially announce that a proposal towards implementation of the “Digital Archive of Knowledge” and guidelines for establishment and coordination of the Digital Archives were compiled at the ninth meeting, held on March 26, 2012.
Results of the appeal for opinions held when compiling these documents are also announced herein.
1. Outline
The MIC is proceeding with the complete digitalization of public intellectual property such as books and publications, official documents, works of art and learning, historical documents, etc., and has since February 2011 started a “Research Society concerning Digital Archive of Knowledge” with the purpose of building regional resources by constructing digital archives that can be jointly owned and used as electronic information on the Internet, gathering a wide range of authorized persons, arranging tasks involving the promotion of digital information resource distribution, and promoting reciprocal coordination between digital archives. The Research Society has also conducted studies of various problems, etc. for promotion of the establishment and coordination of the Digital Archive of Knowledge.
A draft proposal towards implementation of the “Digital Archive of Knowledge” and draft guidelines for establishmentand coordination of the Digital Archives were compiled at the eighth meeting, held on February 15, 2012, and 16 opinions were submitted in response to an appeal for opinions that was held from March 1 to March 14, 2012.
This is to officially announce that a proposal towards implementation of the “Digital Archive of Knowledge” and guidelines forestablishmentand coordination of the Digital Archives were compiled at the ninth meeting, held on March 26, 2012, based on the above results.
