Technical Requirements pertaining to Switching Over, etc. of Frequencies of Specified Radio Microphones
Partial report from the Information and Communications Council
On April 25, 2012, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (Chairman: Takuma Ootoshi, Chairman of Board of Directors at Japan IBM) concerning “technical requirements pertaining to switching over, etc. of frequencies of specified radio microphones” among the Inquiry No.2009 of September 30, 2002, “Technical requirements required for upgrading of low-power radio systems.”
1.Background
Specified radio microphones were institutionalized in 1989 as radio stations of analogue radio microphones of high-quality sound used in production of broadcasting programs, concerts, stages of theaters, event sites, etc. Then, digital radio microphones were institutionalized in 2009 in response to the needs of ensuring high-quality sound as well as use of more wireless microphones in a same place.
As of the end of March 2011, about 20,000 stations were in operation in Japan. As for specified radio microphones, the Action Plan for Spectrum Reallocation formulated in September 2011 states that deliberations and works toward the switching over of frequencies shall be made by pushing forward technical deliberations on the switching over of frequencies considering an option over which the frequency will be switched as white space of a frequency range for terrestrial television broadcasting or the 1.2GHz band based on the basic guidelines for allocation of 700/900MHz-band frequencies.
In view of these circumstances, the Mobile Communications System Subcommittee, Department on Information and Communications Technology, Information and Communications Council (Chief Investigator: Makoto Ando, Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School of Science and Engineering) has deliberated on technical requirements for switching over, etc. of frequencies of specified radio microphones from January 2012 and a partial report was received on April 25, 2012 as a result of its deliberations.
2.Future plans
The MIC will swiftly consolidate related provisions, etc. based on this partial report.
