Mobile Communications System Subcommittee
Department on Information and Communications Technology
Information and Communications Council

Appeal for Proposals on “Technical Requirements toward New Use of UWB Wireless Systems for Communications using SHF Bands” and “Technical Requirements for Introduction of Next-generation High-speed Wireless LAN”

The Mobile Communications System Subcommittee, Department on Information and Communications Technology, Information and Communications Council (Chief Investigator: Makoto Ando, Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School of Science and Engineering) has commenced deliberations on “technical requirements toward new use of UWB wireless systems for communications using SHF bands” and “technical requirements for introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN” from April 18 (Wed), 2012.
From April 26 (Thu) to May 25 (Fri), 2012, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold an appeal for proposals on technical requirements for “technical requirements toward new use of UWB wireless systems for communications using SHF bands” and “technical requirements for introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN.”

1.Background of deliberations, etc.

  - Concerning technical requirements toward new use of UWB wireless systems for communications using SHF bands

   (1) Background of deliberations As for UWB wireless systems using SHF bands, technical requirements for UWB systems for communications and technical deliberations on UWB radar systems were made in 2008 and 2011, respectively, for institutional improvement. Nowadays, the international needs for the use of UWB wireless systems of low-speed transmission as a sensor network for the purpose of measuring the distance and position has increased and deliberations on international standardization has been pushed forward. Based on this movement of international standardization and needs of domestic users, deliberations on necessary technical requirements have commenced toward the introduction of UWB wireless systems of low-speed transmission for the purpose of measuring the distance and position.

  (2) Content of deliberations Deliberations will be made on “technical requirements toward new use of UWB wireless systems for communications using SHF bands” among “technical requirements for UWB (ultra wide band) wireless systems” (Inquiry No.2008 of September 30, 2002) and a report will be received from the Department on Information and Communications Technology around June 2013.

  - Concerning technical requirements for introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN

  (1) Background of deliberations Wireless LAN has been disseminated dramatically in recent years and made our life more comfortable. On the other hand, expectations on wireless LAN have changed from “convenience of access regardless of transmission rate” to “highs-speed access” and “accessibility anywhere at home.” In addition, deliberations on the establishment of higher-speed IEEE802.11ac standard (further speed-up in the 5GHz band of 802.11n standard) have been pushed forward in activities for international standardization of wireless LAN. Based on these trends, etc., deliberations on necessary technical requirements have commenced toward the introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN (802.11ac compatible) in the 5GHz band with a target of 1Gbps of transmission rate.

  (2) Content of deliberations Deliberations will be made on “technical requirements for introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN” among “technical requirements required for upgrading of low-power wireless systems” (Inquiry No.2009 of September 30, 2002) and a report will be received from the Department on Information and Communications Technology around October 2012.

2.Appeal for proposals on technical requirements

  (1) Outline of appeal for proposals
From April 26 (Thu) to May 25 (Fri), 2012, an appeal for proposals will be held concerning “technical requirements toward new use of UWB wireless systems for communications using SHF bands” and “technical requirements for introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN” for the contribution to deliberations at the Mobile Communications System Subcommittee.

  (2) Deadline of appeal for proposals: 17:00 on May 25 (Fri), 2012
