Technical Requirements for Upgrading of Broadband Mobile Wireless Access Systems
Partial report from the Information and Communications Council
On April 25, 2012, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (Chairman: Takuma Ootoshi, Chairman of Board of Directors at Japan IBM) concerning “technical requirements for upgrading of broadband mobile wireless access systems” among the Information and Communications Council Inquiry No.2021 of February 27, 2006, “Technical requirements for broadband mobile wireless access systems using the 2.5GHz band.”
1.Background
After broadband mobile wireless access systems were institutionalized in 2007 in response to increasing needs of users for high-speed wireless Internet access, services have been provided by two nationwide operators and regional operators. The upgrading of technology has advanced since the commencement of providing services for the purpose of improving convenience of users by speed-up of transmission rate, etc. The number of users is over 2 million and it is still increasing.
On the other hand, the service of 3.9G mobile radio communication system (LTE) which realizes a downstream transmission rate of more than 100Mbps has commenced from December 2010 and the speed-up of mobile communications services is progressing. As for broadband mobile wireless access systems, works for international standardization have been in progress in order to realize high-speed and high-capacity communications same as optical lines.
In view of these circumstances, the Information and Communications Council has deliberated on further upgrading of broadband mobile wireless access systems and examinations on interference with other systems from September 2011 and the results of deliberation pertaining to “technical requirements for upgrading of broadband mobile wireless access systems” were compiled. On April 25, 2012, a partial report was received from the Information and Communications Council.
2.Future plans
The MIC carry forward the formulation, etc. of technical requirements based on this partial report.
