Technical Requirements for 79GHz-band High-resolution Radars

1.Background

  In Japan, on-board radars using EHF which are capable of grasping surroundings regardless of weather, etc. have been used for detecting vehicles around own car and for driver assistance in order to reduce the number of traffic accidents and casualties of traffic accidents.
  In addition to these radars, the practical use of on-board radars which have higher resolution than existing on-board radars is expected in recent years in order to ensure safety of pedestrians and bicycles rather than vehicles.
  In view of these circumstances, the Mobile Communications System Subcommittee, Department on Information and Communications Technology, Information and Communications Council (Chief Investigator: Makoto Ando, Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School of Science and Engineering) has deliberated on technical requirements for 79GHz-band high-resolution radars from February 2010 and a partial report was received on April 25, 2012 as a result of its deliberations.
 

2.Future plans

  The MIC will consolidate related provisions based on this partial report.
