Measures to be Taken pertaining to Thorough Proper Management of Personal Information for KDDI Corporation

  The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) requested KDDI Corporation in writing to commit to thorough proper management of personal information with regard to a case of leak of personal information in the company.

1.Outline of case

  KDDI Corporation (hereinafter referred to as “KDDI”) reported that personal information has leaked from 9 mobile telephone terminals, as mobile phone terminals collected from customers for reasons such as cancellation by a sales agent in Fukutsu City, Fukuoka Prefecture from June 2007, that mobile phone terminals were transferred to a third party with personal information of persons who had concluded an agreement for provision of telecommunications services.

2.Content of measures

  Said case has been recognized as violation of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (Act No.57 of 2003) and the Guidelines for the Protection of Personal Information in the Telecommunications Business(MIC Notice No.695 of 2004), which stipulate the obligation of security control measures and supervision of trustees. For these reasons, the MIC requested KDDI to thoroughly implement security control measures in regard to the handling of personal information and supervision of trustees, swiftly implement preventive measures, and report the state of their implementation.

3.Future efforts

  The MIC continues to take necessary efforts for ensuring the proper handling of personal information held by telecommunications carriers.
