International Symposium on Web and TV to be Held

Symposium on Web and TV 2012
  The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will jointly hold with IPTV Forum an international symposium on convergence of the Web and TV titled “Symposium on Web and TV 2012” on June 12 (Tue), 2012 in Tokyo.
  This symposium is to discuss a future of smart TV among major players from Japan and other countries with a view to promoting smart TV under an international collaboration and to transmit ideas on the promotion of smart TV to parties concerned in Japan and other countries.

1.Background and purpose

  Smart TV is a new service model realized by the convergence of the web and TV broadcasting. It is expected to have ripple effects on a variety of industries such as contents, network, advertisement, etc. so that it is required for the entire ICT industry of Japan to promote its dissemination, international standardization and international deployment.
  Currently, “Joint Meeting of the New Business Creation Strategy Subcommittee and Research and the Development Strategy Subcommittee” under the Information and Communications Policy Committee, Information and Communications Council deliberates on a comprehensive ICT strategy in view of around 2020 and on smart TV as a prioritized growth field. The Subcommittee for Standardization Policy in the Information and Communications Field established under the Information and Communications Policy Committee also deliberates on next-generation browser, an essential technology for smart TV, as one of the prioritized fields of standardization.
  In Japan, IPTV Forum has deliberated on ideas toward the realization of convergence of the web and TV broadcasting, and active efforts have been made at an international level.
  In view of these circumstances, the MIC will jointly hold this symposium with IPTV Forum to discuss the theme of a future of smart TV among major players from Japan and other countries and to transmit a basic strategy toward the promotion of smart TV to parties concerned in Japan and other countries taking advantage of this opportunity.
  The MIC will strive to contribute to the promotion of smart TV based on the basic strategy under public-private cooperation and international collaboration.

  About 300 persons from parties concerned such as Japanese and foreign broadcasters, telecommunications carriers, makers, browser vendors and international standardization organizations
  (5) Major contents
  In the symposium, presentations and panel discussions on the latest information on standardization of next-generation browsers, sharing of knowledge with regard to disaster information and media and of state of efforts, and a future of next-generation premium contents will be held. In addition, state-of-the-art services provided by convergence of the web and TV broadcasting will be demonstrated.
