The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled the number of telecommunications service contracts and the market share of FY2011 Q4 (as of the end of March 2012) based on reports, etc. from telecommunications carriers pursuant to the provisions of the Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business (Ministerial Ordinance of MPT No. 46 of 1988), and they are officially announced herein (*1).
(1) The number of subscriber telephone contracts (subscriber telephones of NTT East and West, as well as direct-access telephones, 0ABJ-IP and CATV telephones) has been on a downward trend, now standing at 56.91 million (a decrease of 0.1% over the previous quarter).
The subscriber telephone market share of NTT East and West also continues to decrease, now standing at 79.2% (a decrease of 0.4 points over the previous quarter).
(2) The number of IP telephone numbers continues to increase, now standing at 28.48 million (an increase of 2.6% over the previous quarter). Among these, the number of 0ABJ-IP telephone numbers continues to increase and now stands at 20.96 million (an increase of 3.9% over the previous quarter). The market share of the number of 0ABJ-IP telephone numbers of NTT East and West continues to decrease and stands at 65.5% (a decrease of 0.3 points over the previous quarter), while that of KDDI continues to increase up to 19.1% (an increase of 0.9 points over the previous quarter).
Also, the number of 050-IP telephone numbers continues to decrease and now stands at 7.53 million (a decrease of 0.9% over the previous quarter). The market share of the number of 050-IP telephone numbers of NTT Communications has been on an upward trend and stands at 39.4% (an increase of 0.4 points over the previous quarter), while that of Softbank BB continues to down to 39.6% (a decrease of 0.4 points over the previous quarter).
The number of mobile communications contracts (including MVNO) continues to increase, now standing at 132.76 million (an increase of 2.2% over the previous quarter). The number of mobile phone contracts continues to increase, rising to 128.20 million (an increase of 2.1% over the previous quarter). Also, the number of PHS contracts continues to increase and has now reached 4.56 million (an increase of 5.8% over the previous quarter).
The market share of mobile phone and PHS contracts of NTT DoCoMo continues to decrease, standing at 45.3% (a decrease of 0.6 points over the previous quarter), there is little change in the market share of KDDI 26.4% (no change over the previous quarter), while that of Softbank Mobile increased to 21.8% (an increase of 0.4 points over the previous quarter).
The number of MVNO contracts increased to 4.84 million (an increase of 9.0% over the previous quarter).
(1) The number of broadband service (*2) contracts continues to increase, now standing at 39.528 million (an increase of 4.8% over the previous quarter).
(2) The number of 3.9G mobile telephone packet communication service contracts is drastically increasing up to 2.297 million (approximately 2 times more than the previous quarter).
(3) The number of BWA contracts is drastically increasing, having risen to 2.304 million (an increase of 35.8% over the previous quarter).
(4) Although the number of FTTH contracts continues to increase, now standing at 22.303 million, the growth rate is slowing down (an increase of 1.8% over the previous quarter). The FTTH market share of NTT East and West accounts for 74.2% (a decrease of 0.2 points over the previous quarter), that of electrical power system business operators remains roughly flat at 9.0% (a decrease of 0.1% over the previous quarter), while that of KDDI increased to 9.5% (an increase of 0.3 points over the previous quarter).
(5) The number of DSL contracts continues to decrease, falling to 6.705 million (a decrease of 5.0% over the previous quarter). There is little change in terms of the market share, leader Softbank BB stayed at 38.8% (no change over the previous quarter) while the share of second-place NTT East and West is 34.6% (a decrease of 0.1 points from the previous quarter).
(6) The number of FTTH contracts across all prefectures is increasing, while in all prefectures the number of DSL contract is decreasing.
*1 The MIC has evaluated competition in the telecommunications business field since FY 2003 and officially announced quarterly data on the status of competition based on information gathered from business carriers as part of the evaluation.
