Appeal for Opinions on Draft Proposal of “Smartphone Privacy Initiative: Innovation for New Era through Proper Handling of User Information and Enhanced Literacy” from Study Group on Consumer Issues with ICT Services

  The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has held “Study Group on Consumer Issues with ICT services (Chairman: Masao Horibe, Honorary Professor of Hitotsubashi University) since April 2009. An appeal for opinions on the said draft proposal organized by the Study Group will be received from June 30 (Sat) to July 20 (Fri), 2012.

1.Background

The MIC established in January 2012 the “Working Group on the User Information Sent through Smartphone (hereinafter referred to as “WG”)” under the “Study Group on Consumer Issues with ICT Services.” The WG grasped the current conditions and issues including trends of foreign countries and discussed the policies necessary for the handling of user information, etc. until June, 2012 so that user information from their smartphones is utilized in a safe and secure manner and highly convenient services are provided. The WG organized the final thoughts.
As a result of deliberations on the final report of the WG, a draft proposal of “Smartphone Privacy Initiative: Innovation for New Era through Proper Handling of User Information and Enhanced Literacy” from the Study Group on Consumer Issues with ICT Services was organized. The MIC will receive an appeal for opinions on this draft proposal.
 

2.Guidelines for appeal for opinions

  Subject of appeal for opinions: Proposal from the Study Group on Consumer Issues with ICT Services titled “Smartphone Privacy Initiative: Innovation for New Era through Proper Handling of User Information and Enhanced Literacy”
  Deadline for appeal for opinions: July 20 (Fri), 2012, PM5:00 (submissions by mail must also arrive by this date)
  The subject for this appeal for opinions will be posted in the column of “press release” on the MIC website (http://www.soumu.go.jp) and the column of “public comments” on the e-government portal (e-Gov) (http://www.e-gov.go.jp) and also distributed at counters of contact.
 

3.Future plans

  The MIC will organize the proposal based on opinions submitted at the next meeting and announce it.
