Workshop for “Establishment of Digital Archive Network” to be Held

  The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has held the “Research Society for Intellectual Digital Archives (Chairman: Shigeo Sugimoto, Professor of University of Tsukuba Graduate School) from February 2011 to deliberate on a direction of efforts for promoting digital archives. In March 2012, proposals for realizing “intellectual digital archives” and guidelines for establishment and coordination of digital archives were compiled and officially announced.
  Based on the proposals made by the Research Society, a workshop for sharing knowledge and exchanging opinions aiming at establishment of “Digital Archive Network (DAN)” (provisional title) will be held.

1.Purpose of workshop

  The MIC has held the “Research Society for Intellectual Digital Archives” from February 2011 to deliberate on a direction of efforts for promoting digital archives.
  This Research Society has sorted out issues related to circulation and promotion of digital information resources and discussed the promotion of mutual collaboration among digital archives toward the establishment of systems (digital archives) to promote complete digitalization of public intellectual properties such as books/publications, official documents, works of art and historical records and share and use digitalized data as electronic information on the Internet, and compiled the proposals for realizing “intellectual digital archives” and the guidelines for establishment and coordination of digital archives. They were officially announced in March 2012.
  Based on the proposals made by the Research Society, a workshop will be held for the purpose of sharing knowledge and exchanging opinions aiming at the establishment of “Digital Archive Network (DAN)” (provisional title) as an organization in charge of the function of collecting and accumulating technology, knowledge and know-how of digital archives and sharing and succeeding them among MLA.
  This workshop aims at in particular the build untied networks among related organizations and person in charge of establishment and operation of digital archives. Moreover, the role of digital archives has been reviewed after the Great East Japan Earthquake. A direction of archives related to the disaster and the role of DAN will also be discussed at the Workshop in order to improve usability of digital archives on the Great East Japan Earthquake and make use of records of the disaster not only for preservation of records of local histories, culture and life but also for future countermeasures against disasters.
