International Standardization of “Digital Signage: Service Requirements and IPTV-based Architecture”
Japan has made suggestions on international standardization of digital signage at ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Standardization Sector). The “digital signage: service requirements and IPTV-based architecture” which reflects the content of suggestions made by Japan became ITU-T Recommendation H.780 as of June 29, 2012.
Japan will continue to contribute to international standardization of digital signage.
1.Background, etc.
Digital signage* is a system to transmit information using electronic display equipment such as displays, etc. in various locations including public spaces and transport facilities, and used for advertising and publicity activities. It is also expected to play a role as a means of transmitting information in the event of disaster. In recent years, it has been rapidly disseminated in Japan and abroad.
Digital signage is used as a means of accurately providing more people with useful information regardless of whether we are in peacetime or in a time of disaster by ensuring interconnectivity among digital signage equipment and systems and consequently realizing easy circulation of diverse information. Therefore, International standardization of a framework for ensuring interconnectivity of digital signage, operational requirements at the time of disaster is required.
In view of these circumstances, Japan has been active in making efforts by submitting the original proposal of the recommendation toward international standardization of digital signage and holding the ITU Digital Signage Workshop in Tokyo (Akihabara) in December, 2011 to coordinate opinions with other countries.
As a result of these efforts, the “digital signage: service requirements and IPTV-based architecture” was approved as ITU-T Recommendation H.780 as of June 29, 2012, and it was officially announced as of July 12, 2012.
*Digital signage was selected as a priority area of standardization which should be promoted for the time being in a draft report on the “State of Standardization Policy in the Information and Communications Field” (Inquiry No.18 of 2011) at the Information and Communications Policy Committee, Information and Communications Council.
2.Outline of recommendation
This recommendation prescribes the general requirements necessary for digital signage from the viewpoint of technology and services.
3.Future efforts
ITU-T will continue to deliberate on detailed requirements for utilization of digital signage at the time of disaster based on this recommendation. Japan will also continue to actively make efforts for international standardization in this field.
