Report from the Information and Communications Council Concerning “State of Standardization Policy in the Information and Communications Field (Inquiry No.18 of February 10, 2011)”

  The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a report from the Information and Communications Council (Chairperson: Takuma Otoshi, Senior Advisor, IBM Japan, Ltd.) concerning the “state of standardization policy in the information and communications field (Inquiry No.18 of February 10, 2011). The outline is as follows.

1.Background of deliberations

  Currently, foreign countries take various measures for standardization. It is an urgent issue for Japan to strategically promote the standardization policy with a view to mid-term and long-term R&D strategies, etc. for realizing the improvement of usability of consumers and users and the strengthening of international competitiveness of industries.
  In view of these circumstances, the MIC submitted an inquiry to the Information and Communications Council concerning the “state of standardization policy in the information and communications field (Inquiry No.18 of February 10, 2011). The Council submitted an interim report on July 25, 2011 based on the investigations and deliberations conducted by the Subcommittee for Standardization Policy in the Information and Communications Field (Chief investigator: Hideyuki Tokuda, Dean of Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University) established under the Information and Communications Policy Committee. The Subcommittee has continued to conduct investigations and deliberations since then.
  The report received by the MIC on July 25, 2012 suggests the state of priority fields and the division of roles between the private sector and the public sector in standardization activities in the information and communications field.
 

2.Future plans

  The MIC will promote the standardization policy in the information and communications field based on this report.
