Appeal for Opinions on Draft Institutional Improvement toward Introduction of New Satellite Mobile Phones (Thuraya Satellite Mobile Phones) Using L-band

1.Background

  There is an increasing need for satellite mobile phones in preparation for disasters, as their effectiveness at the time of large-scale disaster has been recognized again. In view of these circumstances, the MIC will partially revise the Regulations for Enforcement of the Radio Act (Radio Regulatory Commission Rules No. 14 of November 30, 1950), the Ordinance Regulating Radio Equipment (Radio Regulatory Commission Rules No. 18 of 1950) and the Ordinance Concerning Technical Regulations Conformity Certification of Specified Radio Equipment (Ministerial Ordinance of MPT No. 37 of 1981) as well as related notices and official directives for the purpose of making it possible to provide services of new satellite mobile phones (Thuraya satellite mobile phones) using L-band in Japan.

  The content of the opinions submitted will be posted in the column of “press release” on the MIC website (http://www.soumu.go.jp) and the column of “public comments” on the e-government portal (e-Gov) (http://www.e-gov.go.jp) and also distributed at counters of contact.
 

3.Future plans

  The MIC will revise related ministerial ordinances, etc. based on opinions submitted, and the inquiry to and report from the Radio Regulatory Council.
