Official Announcement of Quarterly Data on the Number of Telecommunications Service Subscriptions and Market Share (FY2012 Q1 (End of June 2012))
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MI C) has compiled the number of subscribers of telecommunications service and the market share in the first quarter of FY2012 (as of the end of June 2012) based on reports, etc. from telecommunications carriers pursuant to the provisions of the Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business (Ministerial Ordinance of MPT No. 46 of 1988), and they are officially announced herein (*1).
1.Fixed communications
(1) There is little change in the number of subscribers of fixed telephones (subscription telephones of NTT East and West, landline phones, 0ABJ-IP phones and CATV telephones), now standing at 56.94 million (an increase of 0.1% over the previous quarter).
The fixed telephone market share of NTT East and West has been on a downward trend, now standing at 78.5% (a decrease of 0.7% over the previous quarter).
(2) The number of IP phone numbers continues to increase, now standing at 29.22 million (an increase of 2.6% over the previous quarter). Among these, the number of 0ABJ-IP phone numbers continues to increase and now stands at 21.77 million (an increase of 3.9% over the previous quarter). The market share of the number of 0ABJ-IP phone numbers of NTT East and West continues to decrease and stands at 64.6% (a decrease of 0.9 % over the previous quarter), while that of KDDI continues to increase up to 20.3% (an increase of 1.2 % over the previous quarter).
Also, the number of 050-IP phone numbers continues to decrease to 7.45 million (a decrease of 1.1% over the previous quarter). There is little change in the market share of the number of 050-IP phone numbers of NTT Communications, and it stands at 39.4% (unchanged over the previous quarter), while that of Softbank BB continues to decrease to 39.0% (a decrease of 0.6 % over the previous quarter).
2.Mobile communications
The number of subscribers of mobile communications (including MVNO) continues to increase to 134.61 million (an increase of 1.4% over the previous quarter). The number of mobile phone subscribers also continues to increase to 129.91 million (an increase of 1.3% over the previous quarter). Also, the number of PHS subscriptions continues to increase and has now reached 4.70 million (an increase of 3.1% over the previous quarter).
The subscription share of mobile phones and PHS of NTT DoCoMo continues to decrease, standing at 44.9% (a decrease of 0.4% over the previous quarter), while the market share of KDDI is nearly unchanged, standing at 26.5% (an increase of 0.1% over the previous quarter). In addition, the market share of Softbank Mobile increased to 22.1% (an increase of 0.3% over the previous quarter).
The number of MVNO subscriptions increased to 5.22 million (an increase of 7.9% over the previous quarter).
3.Internet connections
(1) The number of broadband service (*2) subscriptions continues to increase, now standing at 41.815 million (an increase of 5.8% over the previous quarter).
(2) The number of 3.9G mobile phone packet communication service subscriptions has been dramatically increasing up to 3.617 million (an increase of 57.5% over the previous quarter).
(3) The number of BWA subscriptions has been dramatically increasing to 3.047 million (an increase of 32.2% over the previous quarter).
(4) The number of FTTH subscriptions continues to increase, now standing at 22.839 million (an increase of 2.4% over the previous quarter). While the FTTH market share of NTT East and West decreased to 73.9% (a decrease of 0.3% over the previous quarter), that of power line communications carriers and KDDI increased to 10.0% (an increase of 1.0% over the previous quarter) and 10.0% (an increase of 0.5% over the previous quarter), respectively.
(5) The number of DSL subscriptions continues to decrease to 6.344 million (a decrease of 5.4% over the previous quarter). As for the market share, Softbank BB stayed at 38.9% (an increase of 0.1% over the previous quarter) while NTT East and West showed 34.8% (an increase of 0.2% over the previous quarter).
(6) The number of FTTH subscriptions across all prefectures has been increasing, while in all prefectures the number of DSL subscriptions has been decreasing.
*1 The MIC has evaluated competition in the telecommunications business field since FY2003 and officially announced quarterly data on the status of competition based on information gathered from carriers as part of the evaluation.
