Aggregation and Preliminary Calculation of Internet Traffic in Japan

Official announcement of aggregate results as of May 2012
In order to ascertain the actual state of Internet traffic (communications traffic) in Japan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) aggregated traffic and made preliminary calculations as of May 2012, with the cooperation of six Internet Service Providers (see note 1), five Internet Exchange (IX) organizations (see note 2) and researchers (see note 3).

Main points

  - As of May 2012, overall download traffic from broadband service (see note 4) subscribers in Japan was estimated to be approximately 1.7Tbps (terabits per second) (see note 5). This is an increase of 1.1 times (8.1%) over the past six months (annualized rate is an approximate increase of 1.2 times (16.2%)) (see note 6), and traffic has continued to increase.
  - On the other hand, overall upload traffic from broadband service subscribers was estimated to be approximately 658Gbps.

Note 1: Six ISPs – Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ), NTT Communications, K-opticom, KDDI, Softbank BB, and Softbank Telecom
Note 2: Five Internet Exchange Organizations – Internet Multifeed, Equinix Japan, Japan Internet Exchange, BBIX、 and WIDE Project
Note 3: Hiroshi Ezaki (professor at The University of Tokyo), Akira Kato (professor at Keio University), Jiro Nagayoshi (IIJ researcher), Kensuke Fukuda (associate professor at the National Institute of Informatics), and Yuji Sekiya (associate professor at The University of Tokyo)
Note 4: FTTH, DSL, CATV and FWA
  Note 5: 1T (tera) (10 to the power of 12) = 1000G (giga)
Note 6: Before November 2011, some mobile communication traffic between mobile telephone networks was included in traffic between some ISPs that cooperate in the aggregation and broadband service subscribers. However, as it has now become possible to distinguish said traffic, traffic is aggregated and preliminary calculations are made excluding said traffic since November 2011. The rate of increase for six months is calculated based on these numerical values.
