
Occurrence State of Incidents of Broadcasting Cessation (FY2011)
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) requires broadcasters to report the state of facilities (occurrence state of incidents of broadcasting cessation) on a regular basis based on the provisions of the Broadcast Act (Act No.132 of 1950).
The MIC has now compiled data on incidents of broadcasting cessation occurred in FY2011 (from July 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012), and it is officially announced herein.
1.Outline
(1) Occurrence state of incidents of broadcasting cessation in FY2011
- Terrestrial and satellite broadcasting: 495 incidents (including 34 serious incidents)
- Cable broadcasting: 98 incidents (including 9 serious incidents)
(2) Duration of broadcasting cessation and causes of incidents
- As for incidents of terrestrial and satellite broadcasting cessation, incidents where the duration of broadcasting cessation was shorter than 15 minutes accounted for about 46% of all. Most of them were caused by equipment failure or blackout.
- As for incidents of cable broadcasting cessation, the duration of broadcasting cessation was mostly longer than 10 hours in the case of small-scale facilities, and the principal cause was natural disaster. In the case of medium-scale and large-scale facilities, the duration of broadcasting cessation was longer than 2 hours and shorter than 3 hours. The principal cause was equipment failure in head-end facilities.
