State of Use of Communications in Japan in Terms of Traffic
Quick estimation of state of use in FY2011
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled a quick estimation of voice communications traffic data for FY2011 as reported from telecommunications carriers based on the provisions of the Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business (Ministerial Ordinance of MPT No.46 of 1988), and it is officially announced herein.
1.Background
The MIC requests telecommunications carriers to provide reports on the state of traffic, etc. related to their telecommunications services, based on the provisions of the Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business.
A quick estimation of voice communications traffic data for FY2011 was compiled and it is officially announced herein.
Please note that numerical values may change in the final report.
2.Purpose
This survey aims to grasp the trends of use of telecommunications services based on objective and reliable data in order to deliberate on the state of telecommunication services that are essential for people’s lives and social and economic activities as well as deepen users’ understanding of telecommunications services by officially announcing data thereof.
3.Main points
(1) As for domestic communications, both the total number of communications and the total communication time decreased.
(2) Both the number of communications and the communication time from IP telephones have been on an upward trend.
(3) Although both the number of communications and the communication time from mobile phones turned to a downward trend, mobile phones still account for more than 50% of them by ratio of type of transmission.
(4) Both the number of communications and the communication time from PHS turned to an upward trend.
