Results of Japan-ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting

  On November 16, 2012, the Japan-ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting (TELMIN) was held in the Philippines (Cebu Island) with the participation of Japan and the ten ASEAN (see Note) members. State Secretary for Internal Affairs and Communications Dr. Fujisue attended this meeting as a head of delegation from Japan. Japan and ASEAN exchanged opinions on cooperation in the ICT field, etc., and agreed to hold the “Japan-ASEAN Ministerial Policy Meeting on Cyber Security Cooperation” in Japan in September 2013. In addition, a next ICT work plan between Japan and ASEAN was compiled.

  (1) Time and date: November 16 (Fri), 2012, from 10:20 AM (11:20 AM (Japan time))

2.Outline of results of the Ministers Meeting

  (1) State Secretary for Internal Affairs and Communications Dr. Fujisue and Secretary of Science and Technology Mr. Montejo co-chaired the meeting, and opinions on efforts made in the ICT field were exchanged.
  (2) Concerning the information security field, the participants agreed to hold the“Japan-ASEAN Ministerial Policy Meeting on Cyber Security Cooperation” in Japan in September 2013 in order to further strengthen international cooperation. In addition, they agreed to promote efforts for realizing the “ASEAN Smart Network Initiative” to support “ASEAN connectivity” and compiled the “ASEAN + Japan ICT Work Plan for 2012-2013 ICT Field in Japan and ASEAN,” which comprehensively covers measures for cooperation in the ICT field between Japan and ASEAN. Japan will commit to promoting cooperation with ASEAN members in the ICT field based on this work plan.
  (3) Outline of the work plan
  - Various actions for realizing the ASEAN Smart Network Initiative
  - Promotion of international cooperation in information security
  - Implementation of various projects, etc.
  

3.Bilateral meeting, etc.

  On the occasion of the TELMIN, Japan held bilateral meetings with Secretary of Science and Technology Mr. Montejo (the Philippines), and the Ministers in charge of information and communications of Myanmar and Thailand to discuss measures for future cooperation in the ICT field.

  (Note) ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations)
  A regional cooperative organization consisting of 10 countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) with the aim of promoting economic growth, and social and cultural development in the region as well as of ensuring political and economic stability in the region.
