Press Release

November 20, 2012

Commencement of Support by Providing Simple Tuners to Households Returning to Control Areas of Accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated (TEPCO)

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) decided to implement support measures by providing simple tuners compatible to terrestrial digital TV broadcasting free of charge (hereinafter “simple tuners”), when evacuees of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of TEPCO return to home where they had lived before the evacuation, and it is officially announced herein.

1.Background of support

Many people had to evacuate from the control areas and the return to their home from the evacuation areas has been restricted, as areas where residence is restricted (hereinafter “control areas”) were set up in response to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of TEPCO due to the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on March 11, 2011
Currently, the designation of the control areas has been reviewed and efforts for helping evacuees to return to their home are being made. However, there is a possibility that an environment for receiving terrestrial digital TV broadcasting has not been improved when the evacuated households return to home, as they have evacuated for a long period of time.
Therefore the MIC decided to support the environmental improvement of receiving terrestrial digital TV broadcasting through providing simple tuners free of charge to those households.

2.Outline of support

The MIC is currently implementing a project for support by paying the costs of installation works necessary for receiving terrestrial digital TV broadcasting to persons who are exempt from the payment of full amount of NHK broadcasting receiving fees and whose home is not compatible to terrestrial digital TV broadcasting.
With regard to this support project, the MIC newly decided to provide simple tuners free of charge, when households that used to live in the control areas return to their home after the evacuation, if they satisfy the conditions such as home to which they return is still not compatible to terrestrial digital TV broadcasting.
