Technical Requirements for Introduction of Next-Generation High-speed Wireless LAN
Partial report from the Information and Communications Council
On November 28, 2012, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (Acting Chairman: Masao Sakauchi, Director General of the National Institute of Informatics) concerning the “technical requirements for introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN” among an inquiry No.2009 from the Department on Information and Communications Technology titled “Subject of technical requirements necessary for upgrading of low-power wireless systems.”
1.Background
While wireless LAN has spread dramatically in recent years and has made our life more comfortable, the expectation on wireless LAN has changed from “access is sufficient regardless of transmission speed” to “high-speed access” and “access anywhere at home.” In addition, in international standardization activities of wireless LAN, investigations have been made for enactment of more high-speed IEEE802.11ac specifications (further speed up in the 5GHz band of 802.11n specifications).
Taking into account these trends, etc., the Mobile Communications System Subcommittee, Department on Information and Communications Technology, Information and Communications Council (Chief Investigator: Makoto Ando, Professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School of Science and Engineering) has deliberated on the technical requirements for introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN toward the introduction of next-generation high-speed wireless LAN (compatible to 802.11ac) in the 5GHz band which targets the transmission speed of 1Gbps. On November 28, 2012, a report as a result of the deliberation was received.
2.Future plans
The MIC will swiftly improve related provisions for next-generation high-speed wireless LAN based on this report.
