“Symposium on Great East Japan Earthquake Archives” to be held with theme of “To Pass down Past and Current Memories and Records to Future”

   The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), together with Tohoku University, will hold the “Symposium on Great East Japan Earthquake Archives: To Pass down Past and Current Memories and Records to Future”.

1. Outline

     After the Great East Japan Earthquake which occurred on March 11, 2011, “Basic Guidelines for Reconstruction in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake” were decided (July 29, 2011, the Reconstruction Headquarters in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake). These Guidelines identify the importance of preserving and passing down the records of the disaster for future generations, and specify that the government shall make an integrated effort for “establishing a system to collect, store and exhibit the records and lessons obtained from the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster” “widely transmit information in Japan and other countries by establishing a system to integrally store and utilize records, etc. which allows any persons regardless of whether they are in Japan or other countries to access.”

      The MIC in cooperation with the National Diet Library has established rules for the collection, storage and exhibition of records and documents concerning the Great East Japan Earthquake in the form of digital data, and implemented a project to construct the infrastructure for “Great East Japan Earthquake Archive” with a view to establishing a portal site which allows users to integrally search and utilize digital data on the Great East Japan Earthquake dispersing on the Internet.

      The MIC will hold the “Symposium on Great East Japan Earthquake Archives” together with the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University, and the Tohoku University Library as a part of the above-mentioned project.

Venue: Hagi Conference Hall, Sendai International Center (Aobayama, Aoba-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan)
