Appeal for Opinions on Draft “Secure Introduction and Operation of Wireless LAN for Companies”
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has formulated a draft guidebook on information security measures titled “Secure Introduction and Operation of Wireless LAN for Companies” for when organizations such as companies introduce and operate wireless LAN titled “Secure Introduction and Operation of Wireless LAN for Companies,” in response to the progress of introduction of wireless LAN in companies, etc.
An appeal for opinions on this draft guidebook will be held from December 14 (Fri), 2012 to January 4 (Fri), 2013.
1. Past efforts made by the MIC
The MIC officially announced “Secure Use of Wireless LAN (formulated in April 2004 and revised in December 2007)” as a guidebook on secure use of wireless LAN with a view to encouraging mainly general users to take information security measures at the time of using wireless LAN.
In addition, in November 2012, the MIC completely revised said guidebook in response to environmental changes surrounding wireless LAN such as the use of wireless LAN through smartphones, and formulated and officially announced “Secure Use of Wireless LAN for General Users,” as a guidebook for general users.
2. Background of formulation of the draft guidebook for companies
In recent years, the introduction of wireless LAN in place of conventional wired LAN has been progressing in organizations such as companies due to its advantages including the facility of establishing and changing networks.
In response, the MIC entrusted the survey on state of use of wireless LAN in companies, etc. and the latest trends of technologies for information security measures of wireless LAN to private research agencies for the purpose of encouraging not only general users but also companies, etc. to take information security measures in the use of wireless LAN. Moreover, the MIC has investigated measures for secure introduction and operation of wireless LAN for companies, etc. at the “Study Group on Information Security of Wireless LAN.”
In order for organizations such as companies to securely introduce and operate wireless LAN, expected information security threats and information security measures to be taken against those threats by LAN administrators in those organizations were compiled as a draft guidebook titled “Secure Introduction and Operation of Wireless LAN for Companies” based on the results of investigations made by the Study Group. An appeal for opinions on this draft guidebook will be held.

The MIC will officially announce the guidebook “Secure Introduction and Operation of Wireless LAN for Companies” based on opinions submitted.
