Aggregation and Preliminary Calculation of Internet Traffic in Japan
Official announcement of aggregate results as of November 2012
In order to ascertain the actual state of Internet traffic (communications traffic) in Japan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) aggregated traffic and made preliminary calculations as of November 2012, with the cooperation of six Internet Service Providers (ISP) (see note 1), five Internet Exchange (IX) organizations (see note 2) and researchers (see note 3).
Main points
- As of November 2012, overall download traffic from broadband service (see note 4) subscribers in Japan was estimated to be approximately 1.9Tbps (terabits per second) (see note 5). This is an increase of 1.2 times (increase of 19.1% on year-to-year basis) over the past one year, and traffic has continued to increase.
- On the other hand, overall upload traffic from broadband service subscribers was estimated to be approximately 666Gbps (increase of 4.1% on a year-to-year basis).
