The MPHPT set up the Fiscal Year 2002 Study Group on Telecommunications
Numbers (chaired by Emeritus Prof. SAITOH Tadao, Tokyo University)
in March 2002. The group has been investigating a blueprint
for the revision of number planning in conjunction with the
elimination of Type 1 and Type 2 categories through the recent
amendment in the Telecommunications Business law, topics related
to the introduction of ENUM*, and measures for preserving telephone
numbers for fixed terminals. The group has recently compiled
its report.
The MPHPT will take this report into consideration to develop
an approach for the efficient use of numbers.
* ENUM stands for Telephone Number Mapping. This is a connection
architecture which, through the functions of DNS (Domain Name
system), uses telecommunications numbers for connection to
various applications on IP networks, including telephone calls
and email.
